Academy Process
Prior to assuming an assignment to the Patrol Division, non-certified officers will attend a local 25 week academy. The academy is operated with the cooperation of San Juan College. Cadets receive college credit while attending the academy. After successful graduation, cadets will undergo a 14 week field training program before being released for solo duty.

Non-certified new hires are eligible to receive a $3,000 sign-on bonus upon successful completion of the hiring process. Applicants who currently hold officer certification, either in New Mexico or another state, may be eligible for lateral entry. A $5,000 bonus will be paid to lateral officers certified in another state who are eligible for New Mexico certification. Lateral officers currently certified in New Mexico are eligible for a $15,000 bonus.
Successful graduates from the police academy are assigned to the Patrol Division. Police officers have responsibility for the protection of life and property, prevention of crimes, apprehension of criminals, and enforcement of laws and ordinances. The Farmington Police Department utilizes community policing and problem solving in providing services.
